Exploring Innovation: Our Journey in the LINE FRESH 2021 Campus Competition

Introduction to LINE FRESH 2021 Campus Competition

The Challenge: The LINE FRESH 2021 Campus Competition, hosted by Line – the renowned freeware app – stood as a beacon of innovation on university campuses across Taiwan. Each year, the competition revolves around a unique theme, challenging students to devise creative solutions. In 2021, the focus was on accelerating digital transformation to boost the economy amidst pandemic-induced challenges.

The Goal: Participants were encouraged to leverage LINE’s extensive digital services and open-platform technology. The aim was to support the growth of commercial districts and businesses, particularly in Taiwan’s four major local commercial areas: Taipei Shida Longquan, Yunlin Huwei Charm, Kaohsiung Liugui, and Taitung Iron Flower Commercial Districts.

Our Team’s Approach: The ‘LINE DATA’ System

The Concept: We introduced ‘LINE DATA’, a business big data analysis system designed to bridge the gap between physical retailers and their customers. Recognizing the hurdles faced by brick-and-mortar stores in precision marketing and digital advertising, our system aimed to revolutionize customer engagement.

Implementation in Taitung Iron Flower Village: We chose Taitung Iron Flower Village as our pilot area. The LINE DATA system was to organize real-world treasure hunts, using the Line API to feature unique aspects of local shops. These activities were intended to draw customers into a fun, interactive experience, offering them clues and encouraging purchases.

Learning from Meaningful Failures

Missed Opportunities: Our journey, though not successful in the preliminary round, was a valuable learning experience. We realized our plan lacked deep integration of local elements, such as Taitung’s rich musical heritage, which could have enriched the treasure hunt experience.

Lack of Detail: We failed to elaborate on specific aspects of our proposed augmented reality game and how it would actively involve local businesses.

Underutilization of LINE’s Tools: A significant oversight was our limited use of LINE’s digital tools. For instance, not incorporating Line Beacon – a tool for businesses to send real-time information to nearby visitors – was a missed chance to enhance the treasure hunt’s effectiveness.

Starting Anew: Embracing Failure as a Stepping Stone

The Takeaway: Every setback is a learning opportunity. This experience underlined the importance of integrating local culture and characteristics into our projects. It also fueled our desire to deepen our understanding of the Line app’s APIs and services.

Looking Forward: As we reflect on these lessons, our team is more motivated than ever to harness the potential of chat software like Line for impactful software services. The journey doesn’t end here; it’s a new beginning towards innovation and success.
