Unleashing Potential at Yongqi School: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Connection

Empowering Youth: The Yongqi School Initiative

Yongqi School’s Mission: Nestled in the heart of Chiayi City, Taiwan, the Yongqi School stands as a cross-disciplinary innovation platform crafted by the Chiayi City Government. This unique program aims to provide young minds a space to explore their identities, sharpen their abilities, and muster the courage to dream.

Opportunities and Growth: At Yongqi School, participants don’t just learn; they transform. They gain skills aligned with the latest trends, forge friendships with like-minded individuals, access a wealth of resources, and channel their talents and creativity into fulfilling their aspirations.

Bridging Cultures: The English Exchange Camp

The Survey and Its Findings: Our journey began with a simple question: How many high school students in Chiayi City were interested in an English-speaking exchange camp? To our delight, we discovered a keen interest among nearly 30 students.

Creating Connections: Capitalizing on this interest, we facilitated a groundbreaking interaction between National Chung Cheng University international students and Chiayi City high schoolers. The goal? To break down barriers and foster genuine connections.

Innovative Ice-Breakers and Engaging Activities

The Power of Play: Our approach was unconventional but effective. We devised English ice-breaking activities like a personality-matching tic-tac-toe game. This fun start led to a board game session, creating a relaxed atmosphere for students of different cultures to converse in English.

Music as a Universal Language: The event also included a group activity where everyone sang English songs together. This broke the ice and allowed students to engage in a shared cultural experience, further enhancing their language skills.

The Christmas Exchange: Building on Success

A Festive Follow-Up: Encouraged by the success of our initial event, we organized a second gathering – a Christmas exchange and gift-giving event. This time, we invited an even larger group of international and high school students, expanding the scope of our cultural exchange.

Question-Draw and Conversations: We introduced a new element – a question-draw session. Students drew questions at random and were encouraged to discuss them in English. This activity spurred conversation and eased the high school students’ apprehensions about speaking English with international students.

Conclusion: Cultivating Confidence and Connections

Observations and Impact: I noticed a remarkable change as the event progressed. The high school students, initially hesitant, began to communicate more freely and naturally. This was the essence of our mission at Yongqi School – to empower students to build their English communication skills and, in doing so, bridge cultural divides.

A Journey of Growth: Each activity, conversation, and song at the Yongqi School events was a step towards a more confident, connected future for these students. As they found their voices, they also discovered new facets of themselves and each other.
